Why I love what I do

I have always been a geek of one subclass or another.  I am a tech nerd, musician, hockey player, golfer, martial artist, sci-fi enthusiast… the list goes on.  I have done a lot of different things and been successful because of my drive, focus and perseverance.  Being a geek is having passion and not being afraid to show it.  It’s not worrying about failure as you master your craft in pursuit of your passion.  I play for the love of the game, the thrill of the hunt, the flow that you find when playing with others.

The venture world is a commercial ecosystem where I am called on to utilize my diverse interests and talents on a daily basis.  I draw from my experience across multiple disciplines all the time.  The stakes are high and the competition fierce in venture.  Sometimes it feels like the net front battles in playoff hockey where you’re fighting for every inch.  Then there are the quiet moments to reflect and say to yourself: “What if…?”.  It’s all about people, all the time, from top to bottom.  Venture capital is the ultimate culmination of all my diverse pursuits into one awesome opportunity to collaborate with other geeks on the shape of the future.  We have a chance to fix the unintended consequences of previous waves of technology and shape the landscape of the future.  It is a very exciting time to be working in venture capital.

“In my experience as a start-up CEO managing multiple Boards of Directors, I have found that individual Board members bring different strengths and weaknesses to the table.  Some are good at fundraising strategy and deal-structuring .  Some are good at engaging their networks on behalf of the company.  Some are good advisors on overcoming operational challenges.  Michael leverages his background as both an experienced operating manager and as an investor to be exceptionally helpful on all of those fronts.  I deeply appreciate having his contributions as we chart a pathway to success.”

-Jen Baird, CEO Accio Energy

Michael has been very important in helping us with our vision of a connected future.  From running our hardware prototypes at his home to helping us evaluate the business and opportunity ahead of us, he’s certainly a contributor to where we stand as a company today.
